National Security

Consumption of fossil fuels will continue in the foreseeable future .  Due to limited resources, production of domestic fossil fuels other than coal are projected to decrease resulting in a net increase of energy imports , particularly for petroleum .  As countries (particularly India and China) continue to develop the world energy consumption will continue to increase .

Increasing demand of limited resources will increase global competition for energy resources primary located in the Middle East.  The countries dependence on crude oil and natural gas located in unstable region of the world is a major national security crisis.  It is possible to argue that the U.S. occupation of Iraq could be in part be attributed to the U.S. desire to control and influence the region of the world with the most significant portion of energy resources.
